It's certainly entirely possible that
Jean Grey, with the Phoenix Force, could defeat Thanos. At the arguable height of her powers, at the end of Grant Morrison's run in New X-Men, Jean Grey as the White Phoenix was able to reboot the timeline. ... That is not to say that Jean Grey must defeat Thanos.
