Why do Angora rabbits have so much fur?

Angora rabbits are unable to groom themselves adequately and their coats are prone to becoming matted which can lead to skin infections. Because the fur often becomes matted and soiled, they are at particular risk of fly strike. They are also prone to gastric and intestinal stasis due to excessive ingestion of fur.
