Mammootty's debut was in the 1971 film Anubhavangal Paalichakal, directed by K. S. Sethumadhavan. His second film was Kaalachakram, a 1973 Malayalam film directed by K. Narayanan. He acted in the theatre drama Sabarmathi in 1975.
