Does Hotspot use data or WiFi?

Hotspot only allows sharing your phone's cellular data connection, not your phone's wifi connection. In fact, once you turn hotspot on, your phone will drop its connection to the hotel wifi because the phone is now using the wifi radio to allow incoming connections.
